I wrote this for a Song Fight. The fight title was “His Last Few Days.” So I thought it would be fun to write a song about an insect that only lives for a few days. Well, I lost the fight. But I consider it a win b/c I got some positive feedback and wrote this odd song. Someone said it’s like a children’s song gone wrong. Yes. Yes it is.

Between each stage the mayfly molts…

Time to get busy with mid-air mating

Join the swarm and copulate

And keep on mating… keep on mating… keep on mating…

It seems so fun to fly over lakes and streams
Especially after living most of life without wings
It seems so tempting to just soar and explore
And see everything past your watery home
But- you have two sets of genitalia for a reason
The time has come to rapidly use them

His last few days are his first few days with wings
Oh mayfly- now’s the time
To find a mate to bump and grind
Oh mayfly- seize the day
Rise up and copulate
Oh mayfly- make haste
And keep on mating… keep on mating… keep on mating…

There is no
No time to eat
No- no time to sleep
Just time to breed
So you can release your seed
In the form of eggs

Oh mayfly- waste no time
Time to get busy with mid-air mating
Oh mayfly- meet your fate
Join the swarm and copulate
Oh mayfly- make haste
And keep on mating… copulating… lay those eggs and… die.
